2024 marks the 75th anniversary of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. RSPCA 200th Anniversary!
**200 years of change**
RSPCA Animal Advice Team
ParksideChart Way Horsham West Sussex RH12 1GY
Here’s to 200 years of the RSPCA. Back in 1824, the world was a very different place for animals. With your help, we’ve spent the last two centuries on a mission to change it for the better. Let’s keep going.
Two hundred years ago, a group of people met in a London coffee shop, determined to change animals’ lives for the better. That goal has been the beating heart of the RSPCA ever since.
The first-ever law protecting animals was the Cruel Treatment of Cattle Act of 1822. It’s often called Martin’s Act, after Richard Martin who helped get the law passed. He was one of 22 people who went on to meet at Old Slaughter’s Coffee House, St Martin’s Lane , on 16 June 1824.
With him was the Reverend Arthur Broome, credited as our founder, and anti-slave trade campaigner William Wilberforce. By forming what became the RSPCA, they prompted a vital social shift in how people thought about animals.
Read RSPCA's fascinating history and see timeline. SO Inspiring!
In two centuries, we’ve improved millions of animals’ lives by changing laws, industries and minds. Ours is a rich history, but we’re not just reflecting on the past. As the world changes and the threats facing animals mount, the RSPCA must rise to meet them. The times we're living through — climate change, factory farming, wars, and a cost-of-living crisis — demand an urgent response.
The animal who changed me.
To celebrate the amazing role animals play in our lives we’re calling on you to share a story of an animal who has changed your life in some way. They could be a loyal pet, wildlife who visit your garden, or even an animal from your favourite TV programme. Whoever they are, shine a light on them! Share their story with us on Facebook, X, Instagram and TikTok and let us know how they’ve changed you. https://www.rspca.org.uk/200th http://www.rspca.org.uk/

Get the answers to all your questions and have in-depth discussions about the award-winning images as you enjoy the quiet gallery in this engaging, 45-minute experience. Deepen Your Nature Connection
Tutor: Alistair Duncan
Woods Mill Nature Reserve, Henfield, BN5 9SD
What is Nature Connection? We can experience the natural world in so many ways. We can learn to identify the creatures and plants that we encounter, we can become familiar with their habits and ways. Or, sometimes, nature will stop us in our tracks with a moment of sublime wonder.
But is it possible to go beyond these and know a deeper nature connection? An experience of more subtle awareness and relationship with the natural world.
This workshop will introduce you to delightful practices that will heighten and enrich your experience of your place in the natural world. You’ll gain a deeper sensitivity and awareness of the presence of everything around you. And a greater feeling of connection to all that is happening around you.

Protect Earth
The Importance of National Parks to the UK
By Eoghan McHugh
Email help@protect.earth Phone +44 (0) 300 302 0065
Across the four areas of the United Kingdom, there are 15 national parks - two in Scotland, three in Wales, and nine in England. All but five, so ten, national parks were created during the 1950s!
National parks and the space they protect offer huge upsides for developing and maintaining the all-important biodiversity that green spaces need to deliver on their potential to stand up to climate change.
Protect Earth is a registered charity in England and Wales. Our purpose is simple: we aim to plant, and help people plant, as many trees as possible in the UK to help mitigate the climate crisis. Protect Earth works with landowners, environmental organisations, and the general public to achieve an outcome that is beneficial for everyone. We help landowners plant trees on their land, and we buy degraded farmland to reforest ourselves. Learn much more at https://www.protect.earth/

Conservation day at Boathouse Field Nature Reserve
Meet at the roadside field gate outside Portinscale, just past Derwent Marina. GR NY 253 231
Derwent Water is situated in the Lake District in the north-west of England, just south of Keswick. It ranks as the third-largest lake by area in the region, trailing behind Windermere and Ullswater. The lake spans 2.9 miles in length, reaches up to 1.19 miles in width, and covers an area of 2.1 square miles. The River Derwent, which serves as both the primary inflow and outflow, passes through Bassenthwaite Lake before emptying into the Irish Sea at Workington. Within the lake lie several islands, one of which is occupied.
The area around Derwent Water is renowned for its picturesque scenery. It is encircled by hills, and many slopes overlooking the lake are densely forested. Wet woodland fringed by reed beds are home to a variety of woodland and lake shore birds.
Come and help us tackle Himalayan Balsam at Boathouse Field, a nature reserve on the shores of Derwent Water.

Hillside Animal Sanctuary
Hillside Animal Sanctuary Hall Lane Frettenham Norwich NR12 7LT UK Telephone: 01603 736200
Since founding Redwings Horse Sanctuary in 1984, Wendy Valentine's name has been synonymous with care and Horse welfare concern for horses.
In 1995, Wendy formed Hillside Animal Sanctuary after witnessing the plight of the battery hen and has since helped and campaignedfor animals in need, particularly those who are so routinely abused in the intensive factory farming industry.
Hillside is now home to over 4000 animals and is oneof the UK's most successful campaigning organisations for the animals' cause. We have always known that one of the main reasons animals are left to suffer in factory farms is because people have little or no idea about the immense cruelty involved in their food production. Although most of our rescued animals have been saved from the farming industry, Hillside is home to over 2500 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules.

Meyrick Park Dorset Country: UK Postcode: BH2 6LJ

The Bourne Free Pride takes place over the weekend 5th and 6th July 2024.
Bourne Free was originally set up in 2004 when a far right organisation was due to come to Bournemouth and preach that homosexuality was wrong. Many prominent figures and active members of the gay communities in the area came together to organise an event in the Lower Gardens to protect the gay communities from the bigots and keep them together for a day of celebration, rather than of hostility.
Parade
Saturday, starting at 11am, with entertainment in the Triangle from 9-11am. This worked so incredibly well as we managed to get so many people taking part with music, bubble machines, flags and so much more. It was a true walking rainbow of Pride.

The film will take you to the heart of this complex and high-stakes operation as you watch Jamie and the Kenya Wildlife Service work together in a race against time to move a group of one of our world’s largest mammals to a safer location.
Join an expert panel made up of National Geographic explorer and biologist Dr Niall McCann, adventurer Henry Cookson and conservationist Jamie Gaymer, in conversation with filmmaker, Matt Pycroft, for a fascinating and wide-ranging discussion around the impacts of tourism on conservation in Africa.
